A little borrowing from the jazz idiom refreshes this favorite hymn. While much of the setting utilizes familiar harmonies, the occasional flatted seventh chords add a surprisingly mysterious and haunting beauty. The choral parts are easily prepared and the flowing accompaniment combined with the oboe obbligato creates a poignant setting for "beautiful words of life."
