The sensitive combination of two familiar hymns offers a poignant anthem for communion, Lent or Holy Week. The challenging flute obbligato requires a skilled player, but the writing for the obbligato part along with a flowing keyboard creates an exquisite accompaniment. The first two verses of At the Cross transition very smoothly into the second tune Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed. Much of the writing is unison and two-part making the anthem easily attainable, and while there are several four-part sections, the parts are accessible. The utilization of these two hymns of the Passion is a moving depiction of Christ's sacrifice and the power of the cross.
